Task: Created promotional graphics for the film festival, Places We Call Home, which screened short films about love and loss created by Asian American filmmakers.
About:
I believe Asian American filmmakers offer a distinctive perspective on love and loss, shaped by their experiences of living between cultures and navigating the complexities of dual identities. Many featured films delved into the bittersweet nuances of immigrant family relationships, exploring themes such as belonging, efforts to preserve cultural traditions, the sacrifices made for love, and the sense of loss tied to generational divides.
I particularly resonated with the last two themes. Flipping through old photo albums of my parents growing up in China, I often see them as strangers in a strange world. Yet, they remain a symbol of home and family to me. I wanted to channel the layered emotions of nostalgia, displacement, and connection that arise from these moments into my design.
